The former British prime minister stressed that NATO is “stronger than ever” and will soon be joined by new members – Sweden and Finland.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that he will apply for the position of Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance. On Thursday, February 23, he said on the air of the Ukrainian telethon.
In particular, the journalist asked Johnson if he plans to lead NATO. He said it was “a great, great idea.”
“I want to emphasize, dear friends, that there is such a plan, and do not forget that there is such a candidate in reserve. This time, I think I will be lucky,” he said.
At the same time, he recalled that former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi proposed to appoint a representative of the European Union as the next Secretary General of NATO.
“I completely disagree with him. I think there are other candidates outside the European Union. It doesn’t have to be the EU. Of course, I consider myself a candidate. This is a good and important position,” the ex- British Prime Minister added.
Johnson emphasized that NATO is now “strong as ever” and will soon be joined by new members – Sweden and Finland. And also in the future – Ukraine.
“Putin rejected all the arguments against Ukraine’s entry into NATO. Now they are gone,” he summed up.
Note that at the end of July 2022, The Telegraph wrote, citing several sources, that Johnson could become the next Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Earlier, Boris Johnson called on Britain to provide Ukraine with fighter jets and tanks, as they are needed to defeat Vladimir Putin.
