For the first time by 2023, American adults will spend more time watching video on Internet what in TV known as traditional thanks in part to platforms like YouTube, Netflix and TikTok, according to a study published this Wednesday Insider intelligence.

“People are spending more and more time watching video on their large and small screens, whether it’s a movie on a connected TV ( Internet) or stream video in bulk across apps,” says Paul Verna, an analyst at the US firm.

More YouTube, less TV

According to the authors of the study, American adults spend an average of 3 hours and 11 minutes a day watching videos on Internetand the time they devote TV (cable, satellite, DVD, etc.) will be less than 3 hours.

And these data reflect only the habits of adults. The trend is such that in the future it will increase due to the addiction of teenagers to videos on Internet. Streaming platforms, which are increasingly broadcasting more sports, are primarily responsible for this transition.

YouTube (Google) and Netflix are leading this change with an average of 33 minutes per day each. They are followed by Hulu (24 minutes), Amazon (11 minutes) and Disney+ (8 minutes).

TikTok, whose use has skyrocketed not only among teens during the pandemic, is eating up a fair share of market share TV, streaming services and other social networks.

“If only adult users of social media and YouTube are taken into account, TikTok has already surpassed them all in terms of time spent on each platform,” the study says.

“The battle between TikTok and Netflix is going to be big,” said Jasmine Enberg, an analyst at Insider Intelligence.

“The line between communication and entertainment is blurring,” he explained.

“TikTok’s efforts to encourage creators to upload longer videos, streams and music keep users on the platform for longer. Meanwhile, the rise in time spent on Netflix is slowing down.”

According to Enberg, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, is right to encourage the posting of videos on the bird network, especially from YouTubers.

But his efforts will be “futile” “unless he can prevent the decline in user numbers,” he said. (AFP)
