Fighting continues in the network of islands and waterways that make up the Dnieper Delta since Russia withdrew its troops from the western bank of the Dnieper River last November.
This is stated in the daily report of the British Ministry of Defense, published on January 8 on Twitter.
The Russian army almost certainly used small boats in an attempt to gain a foothold on the key islands. At the same time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine successfully used long-range artillery several times to neutralize Russian outposts.
Both sides have also likely deployed small groups to the Kinburn Spit, which controls the Dnieper Bay, according to the construction.
Both the Russian Federation and Ukraine are likely seeking to maintain a presence in these areas in order to control maritime access to the strategically important river and warn of any attempt by their adversaries to launch a large-scale attack across the river.
British intelligence considers it unlikely that Russia will try to force the Dnieper – it would be very difficult and expensive.
Recall that earlier British intelligence reported that the Russian command ordered shelling of the liberated Kherson, most likely to lower the morale of the civilian population and deter any Ukrainian counterattacks across the Dnieper.
