A series of earthquakes that rocked Turkey’s southeast and neighboring countries on Monday killed at least 53 people, Turkish authorities, who have requested international assistance, said.
The governorate of Sanlıurfa province, located southeast of the epicenter, reported 12 deaths in 16 collapsed buildings.
This was stated by Governor Osmaniye Erdinch Yilmaz in an interview with AHaber TV channel. TV that 34 buildings collapsed in his province, killing five people.
About 130 buildings were destroyed in the province, leaving hundreds injured and three dead, according to Malatya Governor Hulusi Shahin.
Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced that the Turkish authorities have declared a state of alert of the 4th degree, including a request for international assistance.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wrote on his Twitter account: “We hope that we can overcome this disaster as soon as possible and with minimal damage.”
Felt in other countries
The main earthquake this morning occurred at 01:17 Moscow time with a magnitude of 7.4 at a depth of about 18 kilometers in the province of Kahramanmaras, located in southeastern Turkey.
Strong aftershocks followed, affecting the provinces of Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Adiyaman, Sanliurfa, Malatya, Kilis, Diyarbakir and Hatay.
The affected area stretches over 500 kilometers in southern Anatolia, where freezing temperatures and snowfall were recorded tonight, making conditions difficult for those now spending the night outdoors.
Earthquakes were also felt in northern Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Georgia.
This is the largest earthquake recorded in Turkey since the 1999 İzmit earthquake (7.6), which killed thousands, slightly larger than the 2011 Van earthquake (7.2), which killed 600 people, and the 2020 Izmir earthquake year. (7.0), which resulted in the death of 115 people.
