Scientific popularizer Thomas Unger, one of the most important in our country, passed away this Sunday, February 5, at the age of 92. Just a few weeks ago, he ended his period as a columnist.
“Fortunately, the way of cultivating knowledge is becoming more and more accessible to everyone thanks to digital media,” he said in his last journalistic column in Diario. Tradetitled “Looking back and into the future”.
Thomas Unger he was born in Poland in 1930. When World War II broke out, he and his parents were already living in Peru. “My mother, who was a genius, said: let’s take everything, things are not going well here. And we never returned to Poland again,” an engineer by profession recalled in an interview with Andina in 2020.
His journalistic activity began in 1956. In 2018 he was awarded by Concytec for a distinguished career as a scientific disseminator. The institution introduced the Thomas Unger Prize in his honor, awarded for an invention that makes a greater contribution, development, or advancement in the automotive industry. This is because cars were one of his most famous hobbies.
In 2021, Unger received the Grand Cross Distinguished Service Order from the state in recognition of his distinguished professional career in science journalism.
The Order of “Al-Merit for Distinguished Service” is an honorary recognition conferred by the Peruvian state to Peruvian and foreign nationals in special thanks for duly qualified outstanding service to the nation or for distinguished service.
