Cold and snow storm caused severe disruption to air, rail and road traffic in various parts of northern and western Japan today, killing at least one person and possibly four others in storm-related accidents.
An abnormally cold front that has been crossing the archipelago since the beginning of the week has left record snowfalls of over 90 centimeters in some mountainous areas and minimum temperatures close to -13 degrees in some mountainous areas. Sapporo (north), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
These extreme conditions have led to the cancellation of almost 500 domestic flights today, as well as the closure of some highways, the stagnation of hundreds of vehicles on other highways and the suspension of rail traffic in large parts of the country.
