British intelligence noted that Ukrainian forces were likely to establish new defensive lines in the west.
British Ministry of Defence saying goodbye, that the Armed Forces of Ukraine left Soledar on 16 January. At the same time, Bakhmut is under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“By the end of January 16, Ukrainian forces will probably have withdrawn from the city of Soledar in Donbas, leaving control of the territory to the Russian military and the Wagner group,” the statement said.
As noted by British intelligence, Ukrainian forces are likely to establish new defensive lines in the west.
The Russian offensive in Soledar was reportedly supported primarily by Wagner PMC forces and a subsidiary operation aimed at eventually capturing the larger town of Bakhmut. One of the two main Ukrainian supply routes to Bakhmut is currently under increasing pressure.
Also, British intelligence has published images showing that since the beginning of January 2023, the south and east of Bakhmut have been under heavy artillery shelling.
“Ukrainian forces will almost certainly continue to defend themselves against Russian forces outside the city,” the British Defense Ministry said.
