The Swedish environmental activist spent some time at the police station. Greta Thunberg was detained during a protest against the expansion of a coal mine near the German village of Lützerath.
In Germany on Tuesday, January 17, eco-activist Greta Thunberg was temporarily imprisoned. He participated in a protest against the expansion of a coal mine near the abandoned village of Lutzerath.
Thunberg and other demonstrators were taken to the police station for identification. In all, several dozen people are in custody, said Aachen police spokeswoman Dana Zimmerman. Officially, they were not arrested, he stressed.
Lutzerath coal mining conflict
The situation in Lützerath escalated in early January: the evicted village was planned to be demolished to expand one of Germany’s largest lignite mines, Garzweiler. The inhabitants of Lützerath have long since left the former settlement, which received compensation from the RWE concern. After that, eco-activists settled there arbitrarily.
On January 11, the police launched an operation to evict activists from Lutzerath and demolish buildings. However, the activists fought back – thousands of people from all over Germany gathered for protests in the village. Conservationists are sure that the expansion of the coal mine is not only harmful to the environment, but also contradicts the Paris climate agreement. On January 15, law enforcement officials announced the end of the operation, but demonstrations later continued.
