The horrors of war are cast in a gray and harsh, ominous light, even more chilling than usual, as the rest of the world warms its own under the Christmas sparklers. Immersed in cold, darkness, hunger and destruction, condemned to solitude or exile, the Ukrainian victims of the Russian invasion deserve, in addition to our help, our sympathy. To the sound of cannon, their Christmas harkens back to archaic times when all that counted was survival, despite pain, grief or misery. Wounded soldiers on stretchers, children deprived of gifts in frozen basements, women praying for their sons or husbands at the front. this is the harsh reality of this wartime Christmas for Ukrainians.
