A citizen of the Russian Federation leaves his home country after the announcement of mobilization. He said he does not support the invasion of Ukraine.

Latvia’s Administrative District Court has decided to grant asylum in the country to a former Russian military and police officer, contrary to the decision of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs. This was reported by the Baltic news agency Delfi on Tuesday, December 27.

A citizen of the Russian Federation applied to the Latvian border service with a request to grant refugee status or an alternative status, because he does not agree with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and fears that he will end up in a Russian prison or mobilized.

The Latvian Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs rejected the man in July due to the fact that he is not a well-known political activist and human rights activist in Russia and does not support any particular political force, nor has it been confirmed that he or his relatives -son was threatened after his departure due to public dissent over the Russian invasion.

The Russian decided to appeal this decision to the court. There he claimed that he did not want to participate in the crimes of Russia – that is, participated in the war in Ukraine, and left as soon as he received a summons to the draft board. Since the man had experience serving as a driver, he had to be drafted into the army and sent to the front one of the forerunners.

The Russian also said he took an active part in the Russian opposition movement, rallies in support of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and against Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

The State Security Service of Latvia in its conclusion indicates that it definitely does not support the entry into the country of Russian citizens with military experience. In addition, he noted that he could not verify the authenticity of the man’s testimony, as well as the authenticity of the calls he received at the military registration and enlistment office.

The court, in turn, called the conclusions of the Latvian special services too general and not related to individual Russian circumstances.

The court ordered the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs to make a decision on granting Russian refugee status to Latvia within one month.

As we already reported, on December 8, the Russian television company Dozhd was forced to stop broadcasting in the Baltic countries. His license was revoked by Latvia. Now Dozhd has been stripped of the right to distribute his content in the European Union, the United States and other countries.
