Researchers have discovered a pyramid dedicated to a queen named Neith, however, this name has not previously been found in historical records.

Near the tomb of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen, archaeologists have unearthed a pyramid of a never-before-seen queen, a cache of coffins, mummies and artifacts, and a series of interconnected tunnels. This is reported by Live Science.

For the past two years, archaeologists have been known to be working at Saqqara, an archaeological site in Giza, about 32 kilometers south of Cairo. Recently, they have unearthed several coffins and mummies that may have belonged to some of King Tutankhamun’s closest generals and advisors, and researchers have also turned their attention to a nearby pyramid that belonged to Teti, the first king of the Sixth Dynasty of Egypt.

“Teti was worshiped as a deity during the New Kingdom, and therefore people wanted to be buried next to her. However, most of the burials known in Saqqara earlier belong to the Old Kingdom or to the late period. Today we found 22 mines, with a depth of 30 to 60 feet, all with New Kingdom burials,” said Egyptologist Zahi Hawass.

In these mines, archaeologists discovered a large limestone sarcophagus, as well as 300 coffins from the New Kingdom period.

The archaeologist noted that earlier New Kingdom burials are not known in this area, so this is a completely unique find.

The coffins have individual faces, each unique, distinguishing men from women, and are decorated with scenes from the Book of the Dead. Each coffin is also inscribed with the deceased’s name and often depicts the four sons of Horus guarding the deceased’s organs. When the researchers lifted the lids, they were surprised that the mummies were in such good condition, even after so many centuries.

“This shows that mummification reached its peak in the New Kingdom. Some coffins have two lids, and the most impressive coffin to date has a woman’s mask made entirely of solid gold,” added Hawass.

It was previously reported that researchers discovered that a 2,000-year-old Egyptian mummy, once thought to be pregnant, had no fetus in its pelvis, but four bundles.
