The photographer shows the ant’s “face” up close

Photo: Eugenijus Kavaliauskas

The picture was taken with a microscope with five times magnification, using the reflected light technique.

Lithuanian photographer Eugenijus Kavaliauskas took an ultra-close shot of an ant’s face that looks like a scene from a horror movie. This was reported by Science Alert.

The image was awarded the Outstanding Image in the 2022 Small World Photomicrography Competition.

This close-up image shows the jaws and antennae of Camponotus, a common carpenter ant. They build their nests inside the wood, and eat parts of dead insects, nectar and honey kept by aphids.

It has been noted that the glowing red eyes are actually the bases of its antennae, and what appear to be yellow teeth are tiny “trigger” hairs that the ants use to sense their surroundings.

It was previously reported that researchers discovered that approximately 20 quadrillion ants live on Earth.
