Xiaomi continues to bet on the weight difference in the most difficult segment of mobile telephony: the range premium. One of these stakes was the conclusion of a cooperation agreement with a German firm Watering can, after years of development with Huawei. Although there are already phones under this cooperation, the next ones may enter global markets.

Is the confirmation This comes from Xiaomi CEO and founder Lei Jun, who mentioned on Twitter that the possible range of “Xiaomi 13 Ultra”, the next generation of smartphones with Leica lenses, will leave China in 2023.

Xiaomi and Leica for everyone

The first Xiaomi team based on Leica camera technology arrived in July 2022 under the name “12S Ultra”. Unlike the 12 and 12 Pro models, the Chinese brand has chosen not to announce the global availability of these devices.

In particular, this premium smartphone uses three Sony sensors and one inch sensor, developed in collaboration with the German firm. Due to marketing strategies, Xiaomi has decided to only offer it in China.

What has not yet been established is the presence of Leica in the Xiaomi catalog. Together with Huawei, Leica was present in two top models of the company: the photographic series “P” and the productive line “Mate”. Until now, Xiaomi has been highlighting this “co-branding” to the most expensive cell phones.

The future 12T series is expected to arrive in the region, but there are no official plans to commercialize the 12S range: “At the moment, our plan for the second semester does not include the local launch of Xiaomi 12S, this is a model that will only be launched on July 4th; but, as always, we will be careful in assessing the market reaction”, was Xiaomi Peru’s answer to NIUSGEEK.

Market “Ultra” Samsung and Apple

At the moment, two companies are clearly fighting for the market for the most expensive smartphones: Apple and Samsung. While the former sells 4 out of 5 phones in this price segment, the South Koreans offer foldable and traditional models for over $1,000.

Faced with this small group, Xiaomi and other Chinese brands are trying to open up space by offering differentiated features and seeking to gain a foothold in the market left by Huawei after the commercial blockade imposed by the United States in 2019.

On the one hand, Honor chose the “Magic4” series globally, focusing on the experience gained as a sub-brand huawei. Vivo decided to team up with Zeiss to develop a technology for removing reflections, while Oppo it continues to release its premium range in select markets as part of the “Find X” saga.
