In the past ten years, he has made many discoveries that are important for the further study of living creatures that lived on the Iberian Peninsula about 145 million years ago.
A resident of Portugal discovered the remains of a large dinosaur in the backyard of his house. Phys.org writes about it.
A man found the fossilized bones in 2017 during construction in the city of Pombal. He gave them to paleontologists. So in August 2022, a skeleton of a creature about 25 meters long and about 12 meters high was discovered.
The researchers concluded that these are the remains of the largest sauropod found in Europe – a four-legged herbivorous dinosaur, distinguished by a long tail and not so long neck. These creatures lived in the Upper Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era, that is, approximately 150 million years ago, and belong to the group of brachiosaurids, which are characterized by developed forelimbs. Among the most famous species of dinosaurs, they include Brachiosaurus altithorax and Giraffatitan brancai, as well as the newest species Lusotitan atalaiensis, which lived in the western part of modern Portugal.
“It is strange to see that all the bones of an animal have been preserved in this way, keeping their original anatomical position. This method of preservation is quite unusual in the history of dinosaur fossils, in particular the sauropods found in Jurassic Upper Portugal,” said. Elisabeth Malafaya, researcher at the Faculty of Sciences. University of Lisbon.
According to him, in the course of research, scientists confirmed that around Pombal there is an important layer of fossilized remains belonging to late Jurassic vertebrates.
