The new package of sanctions is proposed to include visa restrictions for Russians, further disconnection from the Swift system, and several other measures.
The authorities of the Baltic countries proposed to introduce new restrictions on trade, energy and the banking system in a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu spoke about this in an interview with Die Welt, published on Monday, August 29.
He noted that specific proposals for the eighth package of sanctions have been sent to the European Commission.
According to Reinsalu, it is about energy, trade, additional restrictions on the Swift system and the inclusion of more people and institutions on the sanctions list.
“The sanctions are working so far, but they are not enough. We need to raise the price for Russia more before winter comes, to end this war as soon as possible. We also need to give more weapons to Ukraine . Estonia provides Ukraine with the largest amount of arms aid per capita. Of course, we will be glad if other countries follow this example,” said the minister.
He also called on the European Union to introduce visa restrictions for Russians.
“We are against genocide. But this is exactly what the Russians are doing in Ukraine today. The fact that there are no entry restrictions for citizens of the aggressor state, that they can continue to visit us on vacation, shop or avoid punishments, is morally unacceptable,” Reinsalu said.
The minister also cited security concerns, citing the threat of espionage.
“There is a war going on in Europe, and often we don’t know who will come to us. We may not be involved in the war, but Russia sees us as enemies. We can be the object of espionage and sabotage,” the minister stressed. , emphasizing the need to prevent this.
It was previously reported that the export of Russian coal by sea has stopped. Russian coal exporters are looking for other supply options, but they are costly and will take time to implement.
Borrell appreciated the EU’s willingness to cancel visas for the Russian Federation
