POT wants to completely destroy international space station (ISS for its abbreviation in English) with a cosmic-scale destruction machine to completely destroy it, including its remnants, so as not to cause havoc on the surface of the earth. space agency showed that the days of the platform, which gathers scientists and astronauts exploring the limits of our galaxy, are numbered.

Through a document called “The ability to deorbit the International Space Station” posted on his website National Aeronautics and Space Administration requested ideas and designs to develop such a complex and transcendent task, in addition to including a list of requirements to achieve it.

Under this measure, aerospace manufacturing companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, Boeing D Lockheed Martin – and these are just a few – will be able to submit proposals based on a variety of questions related to the design of the spacecraft that will be the axis of this operation.

International Space Station with numbered days

Mission POT consists in the fact that the spacecraft, created on the basis of the design proposals of interested companies, docks to the forward port of the “Node 2” of the launch vehicle. international space station a year before the execution of its total destruction. ISS will carry out a controlled descent to a height of 220 kilometers using chemical rocket engines and atmospheric friction Land.

Upon reaching 220 kilometers, the downed spacecraft will launch its rockets with the aim of international space station in an elliptical orbit with a diameter of 145 x 200 km. After that, the ship will turn on its engines to shorten the perigee by about 50 km, and from there the Earth’s atmosphere will destroy both the ISS and the ship on it. Pacific Ocean without the risk of someone being hurt by the wreckage.

NASA plans for the International Space Station

In the document, the space agency provides some other details that manufacturing companies should consider when developing and submitting their projects. As already mentioned, the ship should be in orbit for about twelve months until 2031, the date when international space station will cease to exist.

The deadline for submitting proposals ends on 9 September and POT from that moment on, the selection process for the final draft will begin. Similarly, the agency is looking to reuse the ship’s plans for other orbital operations in the future, as it could move objects into orbit easily and safely.
