These sea bugs can grow up to 18 inches long. Because of their white color in the ocean, they look like giant pieces of rice.

A team of researchers has discovered a new species of giant sea bug living on the ocean floor. The New York Post reported it.

These sea beetles are actually isopods known as Bathynomus yucatanensis. Like other isopods, they are often considered insects, although they do not fit into this category.

They became widely known after being seen in a 2019 viral video, in which they ate an alligator in the first food drop for deep-sea alligators. The researchers said the crocodile was placed on the seafloor, and less than 24 hours later, the sea bugs swam up to feast.

Now, researchers are studying these sea bugs in more detail. So in a new study, experts emphasized that these isopods do not hunt their prey and act more like scavengers of food, so they should not be afraid.

In the study, scientists also say that these creatures look for the remains of dead marine life or any food they can easily access.

Usually, these creatures are found in places with tropical temperatures in the depths of the ocean. Researchers have found them in waters off Taiwan, near Pratas Island and on the Yucatan Peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico.

It was previously reported that scientists have learned the secret of unusual land sharks that can stay in water for a long time.
