The manuscript was found to be used as a document cover in the estate in the suffolk county. I was able to read the text without checking the cover.
The Cambridge University Library has discovered a unique fragment of the 13th -century manuscript with rare stories about the legendary characters of Merlin and King Arthur, reports Armeonews.
This manuscript, which for a long time has remained hidden in the binding of the 16th -century Archival Registry, is a fragment of Suite Vulgate du Merlin – the continuation of the famous Lancelot Graal Cycle, one of the most popular Medieval novels, which has been maintained to this day less than 40 manuscript. All of them are unique, written by the hand of the Medieval scribes. Specific fragment dates between 1275 and 1315 years.
The manuscript was preserved due to the fact that in the XVI century it was used as a cover for a document at the G recalter estate in Cuffolk County. But because of this, the pages are bent, damaged and stitched on the cover, which complicates their identity and research.
Cambridge specialists in collaboration with the cultural heritage imaging laboratory use a multi -performance survey and computed tomography to obtain a whole text image without studying the cover. Experts believe that it is important not only to save the text, but also the artifact itself: the technique in which it is re -used provides an idea of England’s archival skills in the 16th century.
The text is written in the old French language, which is the language of the English court in the middle era. At first, he mistakenly recognized as a story about Sir Gawaneine, but eventually turned around that it was a short version of Vulgate Merlin, which contained two main scenes – a Christian victory in the Cambenic Battle of Kambenik and the intrigue in court with Merlin, who was a harpist in the Arthur.
One of the features distinguished in this manuscript from others is a minor text error – the name Dodalis is recorded as Dorilas. Such details will help to monitor the source of the manuscript and its connection to other known prints.
Reminding, earlier it was reported that in Israel they found the VI century mosaic at an abandoned Byzantine monastery.
