While building a highway in the Mexican state of Hidalgo, workers stumbled upon the ancient pyramid of San Miguel.
In the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, workers accidentally discovered a pyramid over 1,375 years old while building a highway.
This important archaeological discovery was made in June 2024, after which construction work was suspended for excavations. Popular Science reported this with reference to the Mexican Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Anthropology and History.
The pyramid, named San Miguel after the nearby city, consists of five sectors with ten mounds. Inside the building, archaeologists found 155 artifacts, including shells, ceramics, stone products, as well as remains of charcoal and lime flooring.
Researchers suggest that the pyramid was built during the reign of Metztitlan, a civilization that existed in the classical (650-950) and late postclassical (1350-1519) periods.
The tourism director of the city of San Agustin Mezquititlán, Hector Labra Chavez, mentioned that before this, no evidence of the existence of civilizations was found during the Spanish conquests in the region. Archaeologists added that this find opens a new page in the study of the history of the region.
After detailed research and documentation, the pyramid was reinforced with a 43 meter long stone wall and preserved. It is hoped that future work will provide a better understanding of the cultural context of this discovery and the history of human activity in the Sierra Alta region.
“These archaeological finds provide important information about human activity in the Sierra Alta region, especially in the Barranca de Meztitlán region, where the historiography traces the existence of settlements 14,000 years ago,” the says the National Institute of Anthropology and History.
It was previously reported that during excavations in Sicily, archaeologists discovered the remains of a Roman villa with a mosaic floor dating back to the 2nd-4th centuries AD.
Archaeologists have found more than a thousand artifacts under Notre Dame
