Meta has made a decision that goes hand in hand with other technology companies that abandoned their employment plans. Parent company Facebook has announced a 30% reduction in plans to hire engineers during 2022 as a preemptive measure against a possible economic downturn.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, responded with this measure to a number of questions asked by company employees at the weekly session. According to Reuters, Zuckerberg mentions that “If I had to bet I would say this could be one of the worst recessions we’ve seen in recent history.”

As part of their plans, Meta planned to hire 10,000 new engineers this year as part of the implementation of the future metaverse. However, Zuckerberg mentions that this figure has been reduced to 6,000 or 7,000.

tougher goals

In addition to this reduction in recruitment, Zuckerberg noted that some positions remain “vacant”, causing a “temperature rise” in performance management. According to Meta’s CEO, this will eliminate employees who can’t achieve more ambitious goals.

“Part of my hope for raising expectations and achieving more aggressive goals, almost like a slight rise in temperature, is that I feel that this will help some of you decide if this is not the place for you, and that I am with natural selection all in all right.” said.

Meta is looking for opportunities to compete in the midst of a crisis

Tech companies are now maneuvering to cut operating costs to counter the economic crisis in the United States that will impact bottom line at the end of fiscal year 2022. However, Meta has other problems.

To begin with, the decision to cut costs is aimed at slowing down advertising sales and finding effective measures to support user growth. In the latter case, the hidden threat is the presence of TikTok and its quick way to hook new audiences.

Meta’s director of product Chris Cox made it clear in an internal memo that data centers are running out of graphics cards. In an internal paper, he noted that they need to increase the number of GPUs by five times to increase the processing power so that advisory AI can work effectively on Facebook and Instagram.
