The robot was first unveiled on January 22, 2020, at the Human Space Flight and Exploration Symposium in Bengaluru.
Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh said India plans to launch a female humanoid robot into space this year. The Independent reported this.
It is known that the launch of a female robot astronaut named Vyommitra is scheduled for the third quarter of this year, while the launch of the manned mission Gaganyaan is scheduled for next year.
Gaganyaan plans to demonstrate human space capabilities by launching a three-member crew into low-Earth orbit at an altitude of 400 km in a five-ton capsule for about three days, then returning them safely by landing in the waters of the Indian sea.
Singh added that the robotic astronaut is designed to mimic human functions and interface with the space capsule’s life support system during the mission.
The Indian Space Agency (Isro) hopes that sending robots into space instead of animals will help understand what “weightlessness and radiation in the space environment can do to humans.”
The agency hopes that such a robot will help the crew monitor module parameters, operate panels, respond to queries and emulate human-like functions on future missions.
It was previously reported that the car manufacturing company BMW is using humanoid robots.
