SLIM landed on the surface of the moon. Further details about the condition of the probe are not yet known.
The Japanese lander SLIM (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) landed on the Moon on Friday, January 19. Space.com reported this.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) attempted to land the SLIM probe, called Lunar sniper, within 100 meters of the target. The agency said it would take about a month to review whether it met its goals.
If successful, Japan will become the fifth country to land on the moon, having previously been done by the USSR, USA, China and India.
Recall that the SLIM lander was launched in September 2023 with the X-ray space telescope XRISM.
On December 25, 2023, SLIM entered lunar orbit before landing on Earth’s satellite. On December 28, SLIM transmitted the first images of the Moon to Earth.
In August 2023, the Indian landing module of the lunar station Chandrayaan-3 carrying a lunar rover successfully landed on Earth’s satellite.
