Archaeologists discovered an intact medieval glove during excavations southeast of Kyburg Castle.
A medieval glove dating back to the 14th century was found in excavations southeast of Kyburg Castle (Switzerland). Heritage Daily reports.
In particular, excavations next to the castle revealed a medieval weaving cellar, which was destroyed by fire in the 14th century, as well as traces of blacksmithing, as evidenced by the discovery of a mold and more than 50 metal object associated with blacksmithing.
Archaeologists have also found hammers, tongs, pliers, keys, knives, bullet points and a perfectly preserved 14th-century glove, in addition to fragments of its counterpart worn on the other hand.
The researchers describe the intact glove as a four-fingered artifact designed for the right hand.
It has individual steel plates, folded in the form of scales and connected to each other with side rivets. The individual parts of the glove are attached internally with additional rivets to a leather or textile backing, which is then sewn to the fabric.
“The previously known gloves from museums and collections generally date from no earlier than the 15th century. Older examples from the 14th century are, however, very rare. So far, five other gloves from this period have been found during archaeological excavations in Switzerland, although none They are not as well preserved and do not have as many details of design and decoration as the Kyburg glove,” the scientists said.
