The donor organ is divided into two parts and transplanted into a child and an adult. The donor was a 15-year-old boy who died of a brain injury.
Split liver transplantation was performed for the first time in Ukraine. This was reported by the First Medical Association of Lvov.
It was noted that the donor organ was divided into two parts and transferred to a child and an adult. Doctors transplanted a smaller part of the liver to Luka from the Zhytomyr region, who was 1 year and 3 months old. He was diagnosed with biliary tract disease – biliary atresia. Without the transplant, the child could die within months.
A 20-year-old man from the Lviv region received most of the liver.
The donor was a 15-year-old boy who died of brain damage. Doctors also transplanted his heart and kidney.
The heart was received by 11-year-old Vlad from the Ternopil region. At 6 months old, he was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy – enlargement of the ventricles of the heart. The cause of the disease is pneumonia. The boy’s heart tripled in size and barely fit in his chest.
The kidneys were transplanted to 12-year-old Gene from Kharkov and 18-year-old Ivan from the Cherkasy region. The men are on hemodialysis – a blood purification procedure.
According to the doctors, exactly one week has passed since the transplant. Currently, all patients are doing well.
