He lived six weeks. Scientists have transplanted a pig’s kidney into a human

A man named David Bennett, who was the first to receive a genetically modified pig heart, died two months after the transplant.

NYU surgeons transplanted a genetically modified pig kidney into a human, where it worked successfully for six weeks. This was reported by Gizmodo.

The surgery was performed by a team from the NYU Langone Transplant Institute in mid-July. This is the team’s fifth animal-to-human transplant, with the first performed in September 2021. The organs are from pigs that have been genetically modified to avoid the problem of rejection by the human immune system.

In previous transplants of this type, researchers usually tried to keep the new organ alive to eliminate the possibility of immediate rejection by the human body, which was days or weeks. Surgeons have already reported that the kidney was functioning properly 32 days after the transplant, thus setting a new record. The stone only lived for about six weeks.

For this latest method, the NYU team used a pig with just one major change: an inability to produce alpha-gal, a sugar naturally present in most mammals except humans, it is mentioned. They also transplanted a porcine thymus gland, an organ that plays an important role in regulating the immune response.

In addition, alpha-gala-free pigs from Revivicor, the company that provided the pigs for the experiment, have already received FDA approval. This could mean an accelerated step towards larger studies confirming the safety and effectiveness of the procedure.

It was previously reported that in the UK, surgeons performed the first womb transplant on a woman, allowing infertile women to have children.
