The central body of the animal is similar to a strawberry, and its color can vary from purple to dark red.
Researchers studying the ocean near Antarctica have discovered a new type of sea creature. They are found at depths from 65 to 1170 meters. This was reported by Insider.
Antarctic strawberry feathers are creatures with 20 so-called “arms” that can be up to 20 cm long. The official name of the newly discovered species is Promachocrinus fragarius.
The new species belongs to the class Crinoidea, which includes starfish, sea urchin, sand dollar and sea cucumber, and a species of sea lily.
According to Greg Rose, a professor of marine biology at the University of California at San Diego, the round bulges on the body of the star are located where the antennae should be – tentacle-like strings protruding from the base, but apparently removed these. so that the attachment points are visible.
He also added that these sea creatures have small claws at the end of their antennae, which they use to cling to the sea floor. The so-called “hands” – long and feather-like – allow this creature to move.
With this discovery, the researchers were able to add eight species to the category of Antarctic crinoids, adding four new discoveries that were originally thought to be separate species.
“So we went from one species with 20 arms to eight species — six with 20 arms and two with 10 arms called Promachocrinus,” Rose said.
