Sauropod dinosaurs including the Patagotitans roamed during the Cretaceous period in almost every corner of the world.
In Australia, researchers discovered a nearly complete dinosaur skull with some interesting, unknown features. IFLScience writes about it.
The new specimen, nicknamed Ann, bears a striking resemblance to another type of dinosaur, Sarmientosaurus musacchioi from Argentina. It includes very small cone-shaped teeth. They also found similarities in the structure of the bones of the skull and the back of the head.
“This skull gives us a rare glimpse into the anatomy of this large sauropod that lived in northeastern Australia nearly 100 million years ago. Our study shows that Diamantinasaurus was one of the most ‘primitive’ titannosaur. With a better understanding of this species, it may possibly explain why titannosaurs were so successful, spreading around the world until the end of the dinosaur era,” said Dr. Steven Poropat in a statement.
The team performed a CT scan of the skull fragments. The total size of the skull is about 50 centimeters long and shows most of the left side of the head, although the right side is almost missing.
