HONOR is a brand that has slowly begun to establish itself in today’s challenging mobile device market. Since Huawei became independent in 2020, the Chinese company has developed an aggressive strategy to position itself in the region and distance itself from companies that bet on aggressive prices and only in higher volume segments. under MVK 2023event where the new Magic 5 line was announced, NIUSGEEK spoke with Honor CEO George Zhao to find out what tasks he is taking on at the head of this new project.
Zhao took on the task of leading a new era of HONOR after the acquisition of Huawei sub-brand by Zhixin New Information Technology, a Chinese consortium of 30 companies based in Shenzhen. With this new leadership, the responsibility of managing HONOR as an independent brand has brought new challenges and new approaches to gain popularity in the technology market.
“Today we are focused on our human-centered philosophy. We are really focused on improving the experience we offer to the consumer. We want to bring something new.” Zhao mentioned at a conference with international media, which was also attended by NIUSGEEK in Barcelona.
HONOR and the market shocked by COVID-19

Given the current conditions in the technology sector, in which certain health warnings are reactivated in Chinese factories due to persistent outbreaks of COVID-19 among Chinese employees, the availability of components often affects the production of new devices. Faced with this industry-wide situation, HONOR offers some clear ideas:
“As a brand, you can’t blame the economy. You must look for motivation to change from within, not from outside. If you only complain and don’t look for solutions, you don’t change anything. This is a good time to add value to the user and that’s what we can do. We want to help people become better, give value and benefits. If we could all do it, the market would be better.” performer mentions.
It is China that is the market that usually has its own advertising, the one that later adapts to the international market at events such as Mobile World Congress and other conferences throughout the year. NIUSGEEK asked the HONOR CEO what kind of Chinese experience he would like to spread to the rest of the world. This was his answer:
“Actually, the Magic5 series first goes out to the world from Barcelona and then will be announced in China. Much depends on research and development, the global market is our priority. However, we believe that this is a unique and not a stand-alone hybrid solution between China and the rest of the world. However, you cannot run everything at the same time, there is a sequence. In Europe, for example, there are special requirements that we must gradually check. These are different processes. That is why we must adapt and develop, but giving time for this. I hope one day to close this gap, which even for iPhone or Samsung is often difficult. The processes in each country are complex, but Honor is committed to closing that gap.”
talking about gaps
In many cases, tech company prototypes are leaked before official announcements, and it’s usually a bit difficult for companies in the sector to deal with leaks. On this topic, George Zhao responded to a NIUSGEEK question about how HONOR is dealing with these leaks:
“Sometimes we think about how to fix it, and sometimes I just say, ‘OK, I didn’t see it, I don’t want to see it.’ even yesterday – due to the fact that Evan Blass posted information about the Magic5 Pro model on Twitter the day before the team’s global announcement – we just thought, “It’s done, let’s move on.” On the other hand, sometimes not everything is said. That’s life. For our part, we do not complain, but cope with the situation. That’s all”.
The Magic5 series has already been announced in Peru, although only the Lite model is currently on sale. The 5 Pro and Vs line will be available in the coming weeks.
