Scientists note that these findings indicate the location of a knight’s court in this area.
Archaeologists discovered a collection of “elite” artifacts dating back to the 11th-12th centuries. They are found in north-central Poland. This was reported by Heritage Daily.
The find was found in the Polish village of Daromin, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Many artifacts from the Middle Ages have been found there, testifying to the location of the knight’s court in this area.
Archaeologists have found coins, jewelry, household items, parts of horse equipment and ceramic fragments.
“Coins, especially the denarius of Bolesław the Bold, jewelry made of silver, lead and copper alloys, bronze crosses, everyday objects such as knives, lead and weights iron covered with bronze, militaria and elements of equestrian equipment,” said Dr. Marek Florek from the Institute of Archaeology, Marie Curie University.
According to him, among the artifacts, there are also items from Carpathian Rus or the Baltic region. In particular, enameled crosses, rings made of copper wire, silver jewelry and onlays with the image of a horseman.
The “elitism” of the knight’s court is confirmed by the presence of copper-covered weights.
“From the stories of Ibrahim ibn Yakub, a Jewish merchant from Spain who reached Polish lands in the 1060s, we know that Mieszko had to collect taxes in the form of weights and use them to pay of salary to his people. Therefore, if in Daromin in the XI – In the XII century there was a knight’s court, their presence, as well as elements of weapons and selected objects should not be surprising,” said Florek.
In addition, a lead mace and a small bronze image of a horse were found at the site.
“Maces in the early Middle Ages, as well as in later times, were not only weapons, but also a symbol of military power. On the other hand, a small image of a horse made of bronze was probably a decorative element of the so-called spur of the Lutomir type (the name comes from the place where the grave of the turn of the X -XI centuries, where the spurs decorated in this way were found for the first time).
