Mark Zuckerberg announced an internal review Targetparent company Facebook and Instagram, and concluded that “engineers who initially joined the company in person performed better than those who joined remotely from the start.”
The message came in a memo sent to workers announcing the layoff of 10,000 new people, resulting in 21,000 layoffs in a few months.
against remote work
Remote work is one of the legacies of the global pandemic. Targetlike most other companies, was forced to accept it faster than otherwise.
Speaking in May 2020, Zuckerberg said that Target (then called Facebook) was to be “the most advanced remote work company on our scale,” and to this day, its job page highlights its mission to create “the first distributed future.”
Pointing to “early analysis” of internal performance data, Zuckerberg said that engineers who started in Target in a fully personal capacity before transitioning to a remote role, as well as those who remained in a personal role, “performed better on average than people who joined remotely.”
“This analysis also shows that budding engineers perform better on average when they work face-to-face with teammates at least three days a week,” he said. Mark Zuckerberg. “This requires further study, but our hypothesis is that it is still easier to build trust in person, and that these relationships help us work more effectively.”
distributed work
For now, Zuckerberg is gently pushing people to work with colleagues in person as often as possible.
“We are committed to distributed work,” Zuckerberg said. “This means that we are also committed to constantly improving our model so that it performs as efficiently as possible. As part of our Year of Efficiency, we will focus on understanding this better and finding ways to make sure people create the connections they need to work effectively. In the meantime, I encourage all of you to find more opportunities to work personally with your colleagues.”
