James Webb He went down in history and noted this in his latest discovery: six galaxies an ancient array whose existence defies the current laws that govern space.

This was pointed out by the researchers of these new images in an article in Naturereferring to what you galaxies They date back at least 500 million years after the Big Bang, which is very short for stars of this magnitude.

“They shouldn’t exist”

At that moment, the universe was only 3% of its current age. At that time it was very chaotic, so, in theory, they should not have been created galaxies so massive at the time.

“These objects are much more massive than anyone expected,” said Joel Lega, assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Pennsylvania State University and co-author of the study. “We hoped to find galaxies small, young and babies at this time, but we found galaxies as mature as ours, in what was formerly understood as the dawn of the universe.”

While viewing the images, Dr. Erica Nelson of the University of Colorado at Boulder and a co-author noticed a series of “fuzzy spots” that appeared unusually bright and red.

This feature is an indicator of age because as light passes through the expanding universe, it redshifts. What age are we talking about? From galaxies 13.5 billion years.

They are not the oldest, but they generate the most conflicts.

Existing models suggest that after a period of rapid expansion, the universe spent several hundred million years cooling enough for the gas to coalesce and collapse into the first stars and galaxies they began to form, a period known as the dark ages.

James Webb discovered last December four galaxies just 350 million years after the Big Bang. However, these stars were much smaller, therefore beyond value and historical record. galaxies older ones did not cause serious controversy with science.

On this occasion, it is believed that six galaxies may contain billions of stars the size of the Sun, which puts it on par with the Milky Way.

The team plans to get spectral images that can provide more accurate distance information and allow more accurate mass estimates. “The ghost will immediately tell us whether these things are real or not,” Leia said.
