The block of ice has crashed into the Antarctic ice shelf

This is the second time in two years that large icebergs have broken off from the glacier, scientists said.

The British Antarctic Survey has announced the emergence of a new iceberg. It was noted that a large block of ice with an area of 1550 square meters has destroyed the Brant ice shelf of Antarctica. This was reported by Science Alert.

The first signs of loss of glacier mass were noticed 10 years ago. Then there are two detachments of icebergs.

“Just over a year ago, an ice block with an area of 1,270 square kilometers separated from the Antarctic ice shelf, and now the glacier has lost another part of it – an ice block with an area of 1,550. square kilometers,” the scientists said.

According to glaciologist Dominic Hodgson, glacier destruction triggered climate change, which accelerated the loss of sea ice in the Arctic and parts of Antarctica. He noted that this is a completely natural process, called “calving.”

It can be remembered that the melting of the Greenland ice sheet raised the sea level by 1.2 centimeters. This has been achieved remarkably in the last 20 years.
