President Pedro Castillo reaffirmed his commitment to democracy and “absolutely” rejected closing of the Congress of the Republic to prevent him from endorsing a job offer against you.
“At a difficult time for the country, amid the crisis caused by the fifth wave of the pandemic, I reaffirm my commitment to democracy, the rule of law and the Constitution and strongly reject my government’s plans to close Congress to avoid a vacancy,” he wrote on his Twitter account.
In this regard, the President called on the Parliament and other institutions to unite in the face of the current situation.
“To Parliament and all institutions, I call for the broadest unity to work together for the benefit of a country that needs us together to solve its big problems and for which it has democratically elected us for a term of 5 years,” the president added.
The announcement came after ungrouped Congressman Carlos Anderson pointed out, without providing any evidence, that there were “convincing rumors of a coup” from the executive branch.
“I know from a very good source that the resignation of the Minister of Defense is due to his unwillingness to support the coup. Democracy is in grave danger. This time, all of us who love democracy, however imperfect it may be, must unite,” he tweeted.
Minister of Defense Daniel Barragan, submitted his “irrevocable” resignation today and stated that “personal reasons” were the reason for his resignation. And this despite the fact that it was ratified in the cabinet on November 25 with Betsy Chavez like PCM.
“Public opinion has been informed that, for purely personal reasons, I have submitted my irrevocable resignation from the post of Minister of Defense. I thank the President for giving me an invaluable opportunity to serve my country,” he said.
In the same vein as Anderson, Popular Renewal MP Jorge Montoya asked Daniel Barragán to explain his unexpected resignation from the Department of Defense.
“The departure of the Minister of Defense alarms Peru. I call on Mr. Daniel Barragan to speak up and explain the reasons that led to his sudden departure from the Department of Defense,” he wrote on the same social network.
“Perhaps the reason for his departure is some orchestrated plan to shut down Congress directed by the executive branch?” – he asked.
For his part, his colleague José Cueto demanded that Barragán renounce his alleged closeness to the ethnocaserist leader. “If you do not dissociate yourself from the subject of Mr. Antauro Humalashould not be in the Ministry of Defense,” he said.

presidency Council of Ministers (PCM) also spoke out and stated that the government “respects democratic principles” and called for “not indulge in speculation about an alleged violation of the constitutional order.”
“The executive branch reiterates its absolute respect for all the powers of the state,” he said.
In addition, he said that the executive branch will act on the proposals of the head of state. OAS High Level Panel “Initiate a political truce and establish a dialogue in unity for the development of the country. This should be the main goal of all Peruvians.”
