The current socio-political crisis continues to lead to loss of life. Yesterday, Saturdaydied on the day of protests against the government and Congress Viktor Santisteban Yaksavilka (aged 55) who received emergency care at the Grau de Essalud emergency hospital.
Despite the serious situation of violence and uncertainty that is observed daily in the country, last Friday Congress of the Republic failed to reach a consensus to approve the holding of general elections this year, which is one of the main demands of the mobilized population.
In this regard, the latest survey of the Institute of Peruvian Studies (IEP) for the daily Republic indicates that 73% of the population stands for holding such elections this year; while 20% of citizens believe that they should be given in April 2024. Only 5% believe that they should be held in 2026.
According to the aforementioned poll, the population that is in favor of this year’s elections is mainly located in the country’s rural areas, in the southern zone and in sectors D and E.
Executive and Congressional disapproval grows
On the other hand, a poll IOP indicates that 76% of respondents disapproves of presidential leadership Dina Boluarte, a figure that rose by 5 percentage points in just over a week. Similarly, 76% of citizens disapprove of the leadership of the president of Congress, Joseph Williams, a percentage that is up 4 points from the previous survey. Only 14% approve of his leadership as head of the Legislative Assembly.
Identification with protest
The first part of the study carried out IOPpublished yesterday shows that 59% of the population feels identified with the protest, the main slogan of which is the resignation of the president Dina Boluarte and the immediate promotion of general elections. Meanwhile, 37% of those surveyed said they did not feel identified.
