President of the Republic Dina Boluarte, whose resignation protesters have been demanding for weeks, will appear virtually this Wednesday before Organization of American States (OAS)as reported by the said international body.

The Permanent Council, the organization’s executive arm, will hold a “minutes meeting” on Wednesday at 2:30 pm (local time) at headquarters OAS in Washington to host the President of Peru, “who will attend virtually,” he said in a statement.

According to the agenda, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro will also speak.

Boluarte’s intervention came a few days after a speaker from Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) confirmed after an observation visit to the country this month that Peru was the scene of “violence” during the protests.

“There is violence, both complaints of violence by the security forces that are under investigation, and complaints that we have received from family members, as well as violence that has affected a number of public and private assets,” said speaker Stuardo Ralon.

The protests, which killed at least 46 people, were unleashed after the removal and arrest of leftist President Pedro Castillo on December 7, when he tried to dissolve parliament – controlled by the right – who was going to remove him from power for alleged corruption.

The OAS has condemned the violence in the Andean country, but some members make no secret of their dismay over Castillo’s arrest.

Brazil said last week through OAS Ambassador Otavio Brandelli that his country was concerned about “the plight of the former president Pedro Castillo and, in particular, his preventive detention.” And he asked the Peruvian authorities to “consider alternatives” to imprisonment.
