Afrolai reflects on black representation and talks about career and projects

Since when she debuted on stage in 2015, the DJ and influencer afrolai has invested in the growth of his career. Born and raised in the countryside of Rio de Janeiro, she went to the capital of Rio de Janeiro in search of greater opportunities without even having the money to pay for the move. But the decision, despite being risky, was worth it and brought several fruits that the artist reaps today.

The DJ’s schedule is full of shows at important venues, such as Circo Voador and Fundição Progresso, and performances at music festivals, such as Rep Festival and Pirâmide Invertida, focused on rap. Afrolai has also participated in advertising campaigns for major brands, such as Puma, for the visibility of her work.

“For those who arrived in Rio so recently, I believe that my career is going as planned and I’m very happy”evaluated.

Despite the many “no’s” she received along her trajectory, she revealed that giving up was never an option.

“I never thought about abandoning my dreams, even with the ‘no’s. All of them pushed me to always want more, follow my path and overcome myself. I’m stronger because of it.”she said.

Music lover, the young woman has always lived surrounded by the universe of black music, from her parents, and the world of samba, since her grandfather was a composer. Later, she had her first contact with DJing at the invitation of a friend and never left the pickups.

In addition to the challenge of playing in the carioca scene without any financial investment, another difficulty that Afrolai experienced was conquering her place in disco as a black woman.

“It’s still a ‘masculine’ environment, which women don’t get into so easily, unfortunately. Even more so if they’re not white.”revealed.

She said she believes diversity in the music world is essential, especially when it comes to black artists.

“Representation is growing, we are managing to occupy many spaces, but it is still not enough.assured.

The artist added: “The idea is always to transform all prejudice into an impulse to reach places I never imagined a few years ago”.
