Doctor details what Rodrigo Mussi’s recovery plan should look like after extubation

The former BBB underwent extubation and was discharged from the ICU

In the bulletin released last Sunday, 17, Rodrigo Mussi had a good evolution, he was extubated last Wednesday, the 13th, and he is able to speak and walk again. In conversation with the column LeoDays the neurosurgeon Wanderley Cerqueira told what the next steps should be for the ex-BBB’s recovery.

The doctor said that this evolution was already expected because Rodrigo was young and healthy: “You leave the patient in sedation, for the brain to rest, and then, especially in younger patients, there is always a neuronal reserve, if there is an injury, there is something called neuroplasticity and, with that, the expected recovery is this. “.

Wanderley said the next steps should be focused on rehabilitation and possible sequelae: “Is it day-to-day monitoring, will he have good cognitive function, that is, memory? Will he have his speech altered? This all involves neuronal recovery (…) He will undergo physiotherapy, he will undergo speech therapy and this is part of the rehabilitation, the treatment.”

“It is from patient to patient, depending on the size of the lesion. If it is more superficial, if it was more on one side or the other (left and right of the brain). It’s very variable, it can depend on other diseases or comorbidities, which shouldn’t be his case.”, completed.

He even said about the mental confusion Rodrigo is going through: “This is what we call post-trauma amnesia. In other words, all our neurons are ‘awake’, when we have a trauma, it ‘turns off’. This is very common. Nor can it be forgotten that the patient was in a coma and intubated on a respirator. Therefore he knows neither what day is nor what night is.”
