For the first time in 15 years of analysis, a Western European city is the cheapest for tourists.

Athens in Greece is ranked as the cheapest city to stay in Europe. Post Office Travel Money’s analysis of average travel spending in 20 popular cities found that prices in the Greek capital have fallen by 15% since 2021.

The cost bill, including two nights’ hotel accommodation for the couple, meals, tickets to attractions and local transport, was £207, compared to £218 for second place Lisbon.

Both cities outperformed eastern destinations generally known for low prices, such as Krakow in Poland, Riga in Latvia and Budapest in Hungary.

“Athens and Lisbon are half the price and offer sunny autumn climates as well as low prices. Our advice to holidaymakers is to do your homework and check prices before booking,” say the experts.
