The head of EU diplomacy explained that even though Russian citizens can receive visas, this does not mean that they cannot be refused entry.
Having a visa does not guarantee entry into the EU for Russians. This was announced by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, at an inter-parliamentary conference on the EU’s common foreign policy on Monday, September 5.
According to him, he heard from the conference participants that the EU should not issue visas to Russian citizens, but “this is not what the ministers agreed upon.”
EU foreign ministers have agreed to suspend the 2007 visa facilitation agreement.
However, despite the fact that there is no absolute ban on issuing tourist visas to Russians, EU countries can independently regulate the entry of Russians into their territory, Borrell said.
“The fact that I have a visa does not mean that I have the right to enter a certain country. It may happen that a person will not be admitted even with a visa. For example, in the USA, having a visa, you can be denied entry to coming in for one reason or another. The same goes for Europe,” he explained.
It will be remembered that on August 31, the Foreign Ministers of EU countries agreed to cancel the simplified procedure for issuing visas to Russians.
It should be noted that Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas at the Hayek Foundation international award ceremony in Berlin urged to keep Russia in isolation until the complete de-occupation of Ukrainian territories.
