On November 11, 2024, the Transgender Museum of History and Art (MUTHA) marked a new chapter in Brazilian cultural history with the launch of the e-book Primeiro Plano Museológico do Museu Transgender de História e Arte.
The document meets the requirements of Law No. 11,904/2009, which regulates museums in the country, and establishes guidelines for the next five years of MUTHA’s operations.
Collaborative and innovative planning
Prepared through a collective and interdisciplinary process, the plan integrates knowledge from Museology, History, Arts and Performance Studies. In addition to defining the museum’s mission, vision and values, the document prioritizes the active participation of the transgender population in planning and managing their cultural memory.
To this end, MUTHA carried out public consultations, listening to several trans organizations from all over Brazil.
Milestone for transgender history
MUTHA stands out as the first museum in Brazil dedicated exclusively to the preservation and appreciation of transgender memory. Certification as a point of memory by the Brazilian Institute of Museums (IBRAM) reinforces its relevance in the museum field. The museum also celebrates the formation of Luan Apollothe first trans and black museologist in the country, expanding his historical and educational contribution.
Challenges and new paradigms
The ‘First Museological Plan of MUTHA’ presents an unprecedented model of strategic planning for virtual institutions, addressing contemporary issues such as the use of digital environments and the adaptation of public policies.
The document serves as a reference for future regulations and highlights the urgency of fixed funding to ensure the continuity of the museum’s work, which operates without stable government incentives.
About MUTHA
More than a preservation space, MUTHA is a transformational museum that rescues erased memories, encourages debates about gender diversity and intersectionalities and promotes transgender artistic and historical productions. Their ethical commitment is not only to the preservation of trans culture, but also to the creation of new inclusive and radical futures.
