French composer and singer Charles Dumont has died at the age of 95 after a long illness.
Charles Dumont, a French singer, composer and author of many popular songs, has died at the age of 96.
He is best remembered as the co-author of the hit Non, je ne regrette rien, performed by Edith Piaf. The musician’s death was reported by Deadline. The cause of the prolonged illness, which turned fatal, was not specified.
Charles Dumont was interested in music from childhood, including jazz. He studied trumpet at the Toulouse Conservatory of Music, but after an operation on his tonsils he was forced to give up the instrument. He switched to the piano and began writing songs.
The 1950s were difficult for Dumont: music was not profitable, and he had to find temporary jobs. However, a fateful meeting was with the songwriter Michel Walker, for whom he wrote in 1956 Non, je ne regrette rien. This song became Edith Piaf’s calling card, with which Dumont created about 30 more compositions. Their collaboration ended after the singer’s death in 1963.
During his long career, Charles Dumont wrote music for artists such as Dalida, Jacques Brel, Barbra Streisand and Tino Rossi. His songs are heard in movies and TV series.
It was previously reported that Ukrainian boxer Vyacheslav Uzelkov died at the age of 45.
