Experts call for the implementation of effective public policies and highlight the importance of healthy habits and medical treatments.
Research presented at this year’s International Congress on Obesity (ICO) indicates that, by 2044, 48% of Brazilian adults could be obese, and 27% could be overweight. Currently, these numbers are 34% and 22%, respectively.
The risk of cardiovascular disease increases with factors such as age and accumulation of abdominal fat. Cintia Cercatopresident of the Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (Abeso), points out that people with obesity also face greater risks of infections and respiratory complications, including COVID-19.
The Physical Education professor at USP, Ellen Cristina de Freitashighlights that economic and social factors also play a significant role. The exhausting work routine and the difficulty in accessing spaces to practice physical activities can contribute to a sedentary lifestyle and weight gain.
Treatments
Obesity treatment generally involves changes in diet and increased physical activity, and may include medication. The diet should prioritize fresh and minimally processed foods, with reduced calorie intake.
Among the medications, Wegovy, approved by Anvisa in 2023, contains semaglutide, which helps with weight loss by increasing satiety and reducing hunger. It is essential that the use of these medications occurs under medical supervision, to monitor results and possible side effects, such as nausea and diarrhea.
Public Policies
Obesity is recognized as a disease by the Unified Health System (SUS), which identifies and serves affected people through Primary Health Care (PHC). In these units, a multidisciplinary team offers monitoring and referral to specialized treatment when necessary.
