The platform will no longer make repeated recommendations on these topics to young people registered on the platform.
YouTube will stop recommending videos to young people that promote idealized standards of fitness, weight or appearance. The Guardian reported this.
While users aged 13 to 17 will still be able to see such content, the platform will not automatically suggest it. YouTube noted that while these videos do not violate the platform’s rules, their continued viewing may negatively affect the well-being of teenagers.
“As a teenager develops a self-image and their own standards for themselves, the continued use of content with idealized standards that begin to develop unrealistic internal standards can lead to the development of negative statement about themselves,” said YouTube’s Global Director of Health Garth Graham.
The new rules to be implemented in the UK and other countries cover content that mentions certain physical characteristics, fitness or weight, or encourages social aggression such as physical bullying.
It was earlier reported that YouTube Music users can now search for songs by humming tunes on their smartphone.
