Transvestites dominate the CCBB in Belo Horizonte and LGBT+ people love it!

A play written by a trans woman has another trans woman as the protagonist and is a big hit in LGBTQIA+ visibility

The Banco do Brasil Cultural Center in Belo Horizonte (CCBB BH) will host the play “Vienen Por Mí” from August 30 to September 23, the first solo performance by actress Fábia Mirassos. With a text by Chilean playwright Claudia Rodriguez and directed by Janaina Leite, both transvestites, the show mixes poetry, performance and monologue to explore the experiences of trans people and question the treatment given to them in society.

“Vienen Por Mí” is structured in four acts, which combine elements of archaeology, makeup and transvestite philosophy. The manifesto-text addresses themes such as violence and discrimination, while proposing a new way of narrating trans history, offering a queer perspective that is rarely seen outside of obituaries. “It’s about a transvestite writing her story while she’s alive. And that’s all that matters,” explains Fábia Mirassos.

The play is the result of a partnership between Fábia and Claudia Rodriguez, which began during the pandemic, when Fábia participated in a virtual reading of the text in the project “Stories of Our America”. From this meeting, the idea arose to bring “Vienen Por Mí” to the Brazilian stage, in a show that also functions as a political tool to give voice to the trans community.

With a minimalist staging, Janaina Leite uses the stage space in an intimate way, highlighting the delicacy and complexity of the themes addressed. The lighting, designed by Aline Santini, complements the proposal by emphasizing the details of Fábia Mirassos’ body and performance. “The idea is to use delicacy to give voice to the discourse of transsexuality and talk about other things inherent to humans, such as desire, joy, humor and power,” comments Janaina.

The show will run from Friday to Monday, always at 9 pm, at Theater II of CCBB BH. Tickets range from R$15 to R$30 and can be purchased on the CCBB BH website or at the box office. All performances will be accessible in Libras, and the program will be available in Braille. In addition, on September 14, after the performance, there will be a chat with the actress and the director about the creative process and the trajectory of the play in Brazil.

“Vienen Por Mí” stands out not only for its thematic relevance, but also for the way it addresses sensitive issues with poetry and humanity. The play invites the audience to reflect on prejudices and stereotypes, proposing a new vision of the history and experiences of trans people, and reinforces the importance of theater as a space for resistance and social transformation.
