Lesbian DJ faces backlash after appearance at event misinterpreted by conservative critics
The threats came after the ceremony was criticized by right-wing pundits, conservative politicians and Christian figures, who claimed a drag segment had mocked Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper.
Artistic director Thomas Jolly explained that the number was actually a tribute to a pagan festival celebrating the Greek god of fertility, wine and revelry, Dionysus.
Jolly said: “Dionysus is present because he is the god of celebration in Greek mythology, as well as being the father of Sequana, the goddess of the River Seine.” He clarified that the reference was an ode to wine, one of France’s cultural jewels.
