Matthew Mitcham, who made history as the first openly gay athlete to win Olympic gold, discusses the importance of OnlyFans for former athletes
In an opinion piece for The Telegraph, Mitcham explained that many athletes face financial challenges after retirement and that OnlyFans can be a legitimate way to supplement their income. “I’ve put a lot of time and effort into my body. If people want to see it, it would be a mistake not to take advantage of it,” he wrote. Mitcham argued that using the platform is a personal choice and should not be viewed with shame.
The athlete also clarified that his OnlyFans page does not feature sexual acts, but rather content that highlights his body. His husband, Luke Rutherford, already had an established presence on the platform and Mitcham had made a cameo appearance before creating his own page.
Mitcham isn’t the only athlete to turn to OnlyFans. Other divers, including Olympic silver medalist Noah Williams and former champion Jack Laugher, have also joined the platform. They stress that while they share content, they do not post nude images.
Mitcham points out that OnlyFans offers an additional income opportunity for former athletes who need to support themselves after their sporting careers end.
