New relationship mechanic promises greater depth in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
In previous games, the protagonist’s gender change was merely aesthetic, with the characters interacting with the same NPCs and with only minor variations in their stories. In Shadows, however, the protagonists Yasuke and Naoe will be distinct characters, reflected in their relationship choices and narratives.
The game’s narrative director, Brooke Davies, explained to the JorRaptor YouTube channel that Yasuke and Naoe will have unique romance options. “These stories will be intentionally queer, and not just based on the protagonist’s gender, which is set at the start of the game,” Davies said.
Additionally, Shadows will allow players to switch between the two protagonists throughout the adventure, which will provide variations in the narrative as the game progresses. This mechanic was not present in previous titles such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Valhalla, where switching characters was not an option.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on November 12 for PS5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC.
