Nava Mau makes history with Emmy nomination for “Baby Reindeer”

“Baby Reindeer” star Nava Mau has become the first trans actress to be nominated for an Emmy in the limited series or TV movie category. Mau plays Teri, the trans girlfriend of lead character Donny, played by Richard Gadd, who also received a nomination.

“Unfortunately, opportunities for trans people, Latinas and other underrepresented groups have been extremely limited,” Mau told Entertainment Weekly after the nominations were announced. “This holds us back from growing in our craft and exploring our full potential. From the beginning, it was an honor, when I first read the script, to consider being a part of a story like this.”

Mau hopes the show’s success will raise awareness for trans artists. “What ‘Baby Reindeer’ and this moment have shown is that when you have opportunities, you can grow into them and go so much further,” she added. “I hope I’m not the only one stepping up. I’m honored to be celebrating this year.”

Mau told Deadline that she cried tears of joy for 45 minutes. “For trans artists, we don’t get many opportunities to develop our art, grow as artists and be recognized for who we are and who we can be,” she said. “It was an invaluable experience to be a part of this series. Every step of the way, I felt the way the experience transformed me, my life and possibilities.”

Other queer stars and shows nominated include Andrew Scott for “Ripley,” “Fellow Travelers” duo Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey, Jodie Foster for “True Detective: Night Country” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” In 2021, MJ Rodriguez of “Pose” became the first trans actress to be nominated in a major category.

The Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on September 15.
