In the first five months of 2024, 117 same-sex marriages and 191 gender changes were registered in Minas Gerais registry offices
In 2023, Minas Gerais registry offices recorded 304 same-sex marriages and 465 gender changes. Compared to 2022, when 1,118 same-sex marriages took place, there was a 72% reduction in the last year. However, the number of marriages in 2023 was 45.5% higher than the 209 performed in 2013, the year in which the national regulation for same-sex marriages in registry offices came into effect.
To perform a civil marriage, the parties, accompanied by two witnesses over the age of 18, must appear at the Civil Registry Office to register the marriage. The required documents include a birth certificate, identity card and proof of residence. The cost of the wedding varies depending on the state and the location chosen for the ceremony.
In the case of gender and name change, it is necessary to present personal documents to the registry office. The registry officer must then conduct an interview with the applicant. All procedures are detailed in a booklet provided by Arpen-Brasil.
