MS promotes blood donation campaign for LGBT+

The objective is to cooperate with blood bank stocks and mainly demystify the association of LGBT+ people with diseases

In celebration of the May of Diversity, the Citizenship Secretariat of Mato Grosso do Sul carries out the first “Blood LGBTQIA+ Saves Lives” campaign. Next Saturday (18), Hemosul will be open from 7am to 5pm, to receive blood donors, in addition to updating data for bone marrow registration.

Created by the CEC LGBT+ (State Center for LGBT Citizenship), the campaign aims to encourage blood donation, cooperating with blood bank stocks, and mainly demystify the association of LGBT+ people with diseases.

“Although homosexuality has not been considered a disease since 1990, it was only in 2020 that LGBTQIA+ people were able to donate blood, before that it was prohibited. Only in May 2020, the STF (Supreme Federal Court) considered the impediment to blood donation by men who have sexual relations with people of the same sex as unconstitutional”, explains the coordinator of the CEC, Gaby Antonietta.

For the head of the Hemosul Funding sector, Lucéia Fernandes, actions like these are very important to help with the number of donations and thus serve the hospitals. “We remember that our stocks are low, especially O positive and O negative, and actions like these make all the difference in helping us increase these stocks. We are grateful for all of you who are mobilizing to bring donors to us, and you are all welcome in this action that will certainly be a success”, she emphasized.

To donate you must be between 16 and 69 years old and be very well fed. Remembering that teenagers need to be accompanied by a father or mother or legal guardian. Although the new law allows donations from people weighing less than 50 kg, Rede Hemosul-MS reserves the right to only accept donors weighing 51 kg or more, for the best use of the blood collected and the donor’s safety.

Men can donate up to four times a year with a minimum interval of two months. Women can donate up to three times a year with a minimum interval of three months. To check the basic donation criteria, click here.
